President of the Thiras Boatmen Union
In a rare first-person narrative, Mr. Kanakaris reflects on eight decades of maritime service, resilience, and transformation. From wooden boats to ISO-certified fleets, from volcanic waves to international waters — this is not just the story of an institution, but the vision of the man who shaped it. _Published exclusively in Santorini Life Magazine.
Born out of necessity in the post-war years, the Thiras Boatmen Union has played a vital role in the economic and social life of Santorini for over 80 years. From the days when small wooden boats bridged the gap between large ships and the island’s unwelcoming shores, to the modern fleet of certified vessels and professional captains, the Union has continuously adapted to the changing needs of tourism and maritime services.
Throughout its evolution, the Union has not only upheld safety, efficiency, and hospitality as core values, but also pioneered innovation — including the construction of the first semi-submarine vessel in Greece, the “Atlantis Santorini I.” It has received international recognition with ISO certifications and contributes significantly to the island’s social fabric by supporting schools, health services, environmental efforts, and cultural institutions.
Today, with plans to develop a modern shipyard in Vlychada and a renewed vision for inter-island service, the Boatmen of Santorini remain committed to excellence, tradition, and the sustainable development of the island they proudly serve.
