Tourism with Identity: Santorini’s Cultural Heritage as a Development Asset
Santorini is not just a world-renowned travel destination; it is a living museum of culture, history, and aesthetics. Its unique identity — from the prehistoric settlement of Akrotiri to its traditional architecture and wine-making heritage — serves as a valuable asset for both the island and the country’s development. The Greek government has prioritized the promotion of this cultural heritage by supporting sustainable and thematic tourism. A dedicated promotional plan for Santorini has been finalized in collaboration with the South Aegean Region and the Greek National Tourism Organization (GNTO). Additionally, the creation of a Destination Management and Marketing Organization (DMMO), funded by the Recovery and Resilience Facility, strengthens the island’s strategic promotion. Santorini’s cultural identity is further enhanced through quality certifications awarded to visitable wineries, olive mills, and dairies, promoting agritourism and gastronomy. The “Plastic-Free Santorini” campaign positions the island as a model of ecological sensitivity and a sustainable destination.
The island is also developing new forms of tourism that expand its footprint in a qualitative manner. Maritime tourism — particularly yachting — has flourished in recent years, offering visitors unique perspectives of Santorini’s hidden natural beauty and authentic hospitality. Moreover, Santorini has gained international recognition as a leading wedding destination, attracting couples worldwide who choose to unite their lives against the backdrop of the caldera and Oia’s sunset. Santorini moves forward with vision and planning. Its cultural heritage is not merely a legacy to be preserved but a dynamic tool for development that strengthens the local economy, creates jobs, and shapes a tourism model that respects the land and its people.
As a Member of Parliament for the Cyclades, I remain committed to supporting every initiative that reinforces Santorini as a model of cultural, thematic, and sustainable tourism.
